Canoesongs Volume I
A must-have compilation for any canoeist
© Outdoor Adventure Canada

"Canoe, the ultimate craft. Light, symmetrical and balanced. It moves in the river, and leaves no track. It runs on hard work and the cycles of nature. It supports independence, but teaches duality. It carries what we need to survive with no room for extras. It is strong but bends to wild water and big waves. It can move with the water or against it, but only for so long. It counsels care and moderation. It can be blown away by the wind, and it can provide shelter when all else is gone. But best of all, this canoe takes us to the lad, into the land, to places where we would never be without it. We can take it up the mountain to where the river rises. It can take us to the sea." - James Raffan

James Raffan has teamed up with Paul and Beverly Mills to compile Canoesongs Volume I. This wonderful compilation includes paddling songs from inspiring Canadian musicians such as Ian Tamblyn, Bruce Cockburn, Tamarack and James Gordon. The tracks range from a traditional Voyageur song named "La v'la m'amie" performed by Tanglefoot to the hilarious lyrics of "When I First Stepped in a Canoe" by Shelley Posen. The CD is produced by Portage Productions and it is very fitting that proceeds help support the Canadian Canoe Museum.

Canoesongs Volume I has become Team OAC's favourite background music for trip planning get-togethers and meetings. The songs invoke the serenity of paddling a winding creek or a wilderness lake and made us yearn for the spring thaw. We related to the mishaps in Shelley Posen's anecdotal tune and we felt the rhythm of paddling in Fred Penner's "Land of the Silver Birch/My Paddle's Keen & Bright". With a genuine Canadian folk music vibe this CD is a must have for any paddler.
