I throw it in with most everything I dehydrate. About a 1/4 cup per serving. Can't have too much protein!

use real meat! (and that from a gal who used to be a vegetarian!)

now seriously... if TVP isn't in your regular diet at home you might want to start adding it slowly... or you might have a we bit of tummy trouble... gaseous

I had TVP in a friend's chili that he served. I was not impressed. I would much rather dehydrate ground beef and toss it in every meal. Come to think of it that's what we did in Temagami a few years back. We dehydrated so much that by the 5th day we added it to every supper and it was really appreciated.

Preacher... are you vegetarian? If not, then why don't you use real meat?

The TVP that we are using is already flavored. We have beef, ham, bacon, taco, and sausage flavored. we used some on the last trip ,sausage with powerded eggs for breakfast, and everyone liked it. I won't use it alone but will use it to supplement the regular food we take. I may dehydrate some ground beef for chili and add tvp to that. How long will dehydrated ground beef keep?
Thanks again

Hi Kipawakurt... the dried meat will keep for a month or more on a trip. at home put it in zippered freezer bags or vac pac it... then toss in the freezer. There it will keep about 10 months.

Oh I'm a meat eater. Spent 5 years working in a couple of steak houses in TO.

I'm suspicious of most meat's ability to stay safe on a camping trip. If the weather's going to be cold, then I'll pack bacon or something if weight isn't a big issue. I am not likely to change my opinion on this, kind of like filtering water. Some things aren't worth the risk.

With the exception of dehydration being the purpose, like jerky, it's a cruel thing to do to meat. Just plain wrong. There's a wold of difference between dry aged and dehydrated. Tofu & tvp are easier and provide just as much as meat.

The TVP I use is plain granular. SoSoya is absolute crap, like chewing on a sponge. Mostly I prefer to add my own flavours. I'll also use tofu in my sauces, dehydrate it with the whole batch.

Oh man... you are missing so much.... dehydration makes food safe and I guess I'll just have to prove it to you... granted you can't rehydrate a steak but you can do some pretty wonderful (and very safe) meals using meat with your dehydrator. The recipe I shared with you was a prime example of a very good meat recipe that tastes delicious.

I'm going to make it my new goal... to change your mind and cure your meat dehydrophobia... .

By the way.. I always filter my water... and that of everyone else camping with us too.

OK, the years have rolled by and what is the status of your goal? Have you converted Preacher to "real meat"?

Nope. I still am not a fan of dehydrated meat. Much easier to just go without meat for a few days. I'll pack fresh/frozen depending on the season & trip.

Nothing beats a simple meal like Hamburger Helper made from dehydrated hamburger after a long day of paddling. Add in some dehydrated corn and peas and it's a meal fit for a king.

You really don't know what you're missing.

So many canoe routes. So little time.

I think the issue is Preacher does not like "Scratch and Sniff" food.

Fresh fish beats that hamburger helper easy.
I do not like scratch & sniff food when my bowels and limited supply of TP hangs in the balance.

I'm not against dried meat, not afraid of it, not interested in the mediocre results I've experienced. Jerky's great. Foil pouches are also good. Ground meat is either the lowest quality chuck or a sad thing to do to a noble cut. That is, unless you're having steak tartar in which case grinding it is the wrong thing to do - it must be chopped.
