I recently dehydrated spaghetti meat sauce 4:1.5 cups

I'm a little worried on how much water to add to reconstitute both sauce and meat - should I rehydrate them seperately?

I rehydrate them together. I take the measurement from before I dehydrated and add enough boiling water to the sauce to bring it back to that measurement (include the dried sauce in that or you'll have spaghetti water - been there). I'd also add slightly less water than was taken out in the dehydration process. So let's say I started out with 2 cups of sauce and my dehydrated measurement was 3/4 cup. I would add 1 to 1 1/8 cups of boiling water and see if I needed to add the add the rest of the water after the sauce was reconstituted. I always rehydrate meals containing meat using a screw top container (I prefer a wide mouth Nalgene water bottle) and then place it in a cozy. This way it rehydrates more quickly because of the pressure created by the steam and I don't need to reheat before serving.

Oh, and if you ever forget the measurement you can use a 1:1 ratio of dried food to water and you should be okay.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Laurie always so helpful :-) I have three and a half guinea pigs this weekend at Crotch Lake (North Frontenac) who I am dying to try this and other dehydrated meals with. Just yesterday I dehydrated a 540ml can of Campbell's Italian Wedding Soup - I seperated the solids from the liquid then measured the liquid which gave me 1 1/2 cups. I figure about a cup of solids. I didn't dehydrate the liquid because it would seem to be impossible? To recon the wedding soup, I should add 1 1/2 cups of boiling water to it? or would I need to take into account the extra moisture in the solids before drying 1 1/2+ cups?

Not sure... I measure everything because I generally cook and dry whole meals or the majority of the meal in one go. I very rarely just dry ground beef on it's own. There are also a lot of variables... how the meat was cooked, how much fat and water was drained/rinsed off, etc. Best just to dig out the measuring cup. If you've already dried it then refer to the ratio I mentioned. Sorry I'm not much help with that but I would say, at a guess, maybe 1 1/2 cups... but this is just a guess.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical when it came to rehydrating the spag sauce over the long weekend but to my surprise it came back amazingly and tasted just as good. I asked the guinea pigs their honest opinion and on a scale of 1 to 5, I got 4 all around. I surprised even myself when I slowly saw it come back to what it once was and was sort of reluctant to try it before anyone else did but I did and enjoyed it. Next time I will throw in a little heat. Woohoo!
