Is it possible to dehydrate flat round sausages i.e Breakfast Sausage Rounds. If so what is the procedure?

I'm not sure if it'll dehydrate properly or not because of the fat content in the sausage? i'm no expert...

hhhmmm...tharman...the fat is gonna be an issue....you will ave to render (cook) off all the fat and rinse well in hot water before dehydrating...even then I would be leary!

The fat would not be the only problem, but the lack of a cure in "fresh sausage" such as breakfast sausage. Dry sausages that do not require refrigeration have salts and some form of cure in them to prevent bacterial growth. If your intention was to turn the breakfast sausage patties into a more typical cured-type of sausage, it won't work. If your intention is to create a dried product that when soaked in water will return to it's former glory, well that won't really work either and would spoil too quickly because of the fat.

You can make your own sausage, but there's lots to know and there are books and web sites dedicated to it.

You can dry some sausage meat (like hot Italian sausages) if you remove the casings and crumble them up like ground beef. Then, as canuckcamper mentions, you have to render and rinse which I would recommend doing several times. Then reseason and dehydrate. I don't think it would work with sausage rounds and you have to be really careful even with the method I describe for the Italian sausage. Keep the dried meat in the freezer until your trip and use it early on your trip. If it is August and very hot then I'd opt for something else.

Can you dehydrate the bulk type breakfast sausage? You cook it like ground beef soooo....I would think it would be the same.

Anyone have any experience with this?
