I know of people who have seen bears in APP. Never saw on there in 20 years.

OFAH is a great organisation that does a lot of conservation. They're also an organisation that profits from hunting bears. The cancelling of the spring hunt isn't the only factor.

A topic got locked on CCR? I'm shocked. Speechless.

You guys want to see bears in Ontario?

http://www.bearsoftoronto.org/

They're looking for volunteers for the big parade in a few weeks.

There's a part of me making, creating the perceptions which in everyday life would be bizarre; there's another part of me which is a kind of observer. About half of the pleasure comes from the observer-part appreciating the work of the creator-part. I smile, or sometimes even laugh out loud at the pictures on the insides of my eyelids.

We've had a lot of bear sightings in town this year, with one running right by our house. Don't know the reason for such a high incident of bears roaming through here lately.

now back in Ontario

I watched her interview on the news. The same lady said once she realized the bear was intent on attacking her she went into survival mode and went limp and quiet - then the bear left her alone.

She said she will continue to camp, that this was a rogue bear. Wow, I admire her bravery and stedfast commitment to not let it interfere with her enjoyment of camping. If that were me I'd have a very hard time sleeping comfortably in a tent for a very long time.

If its Ontario your in, my guess would be the ban on hunting them. I don't live in Ontario, but I hear they are becoming quite numerous over the last few years.

Suggesting a single factor like the bear hunt being the cause of the increase in bear sightings is ridiculous. A far more likely cause is our never-ending encroachment on their territory. Anyone driving from S Ont to APP should count the number of new home developments. Multiply that number by 100 for all the developments you can't see from the highway.

What neighbourhood are ya in, DB?

Not far from the upper reach of Lake Ontario urban sprawl. Do you get many hunters in your area? The fall bear hunt is still on.

Well we can all make an educated guess. If the spring hunt wasn't cancelled we wouldn't be hearing about all these bear problems. The three years before the ban, there were 2600 calls in Ontario about problem bears, the three years after the ban, there were 12,000 calls.

While backpacking the first loop on the Western Upland Trail 20 years ago I stopped for a drink just north of Maggie Lake prior to descending to Mink Creek.

I had taken my old Kelty D4 pack off, pulled the water bottle out of one of the side pockets (Dusty Boots, you might remember metal zippers) and as I took a swig I heard rustling behind me.

Turning around I saw a little black nose coming out from behind a tree perhaps 150 yards away. As it slowly moved right to left I saw enough to realize it was a small bear so I put the water bottle back in the pocket, picked up the pack, took one step and as I looked over my shoulder, I saw the cub shott straight up the tree. By the time I took the third step and had the pack swung up and on both shoulders the bear came straight back down and raced off away from me.

As I got a few more steps down the trail, I reached back into the pack as I had a whistle on a chain and I wanted to pull it out and let it dangle on the outside to have a little noise to warn animals something was walking down the trail.

The whistle or the chain snagged on something in the pack and I remember being almost more frustrated by being unable to quickly get the whistle out of the pack than I was concerned about mama bear who I knew was nearby the little one.

Eventually the whistle came out and I let it dangle but then as I descended downhill to Mink and up the other side towards the fork in the trail where the loops separated, every little noise I heard made me slow and listen. It took about half an hour to get back to normal.

One my last day of the trip near Ramona Lake I was walking head down looking at the trail and I heard a "horse" sound, like the heavy stomp of hooves, and looked up and to the left and was startled by a moose standing butt towards the trail but looking over its shoulder at me.

I said, "OK, this is your house. I'm leaving."

Never seen a bear in 27 years of canoeing in APP though once in Temagami and once in Chapleau.

Just remember, you may keep a clean campsite but you never know what the previous occupants may have done that is downright stupid so carefully check your site before you find visitors, even small ones, annoying you in the dark.

Seeing a bear is an honor. Except seeing it too close..aka totalled car. Ever had to deal with a not quite dead bear you just hit with your car?

Seen some ten of them this year. Four in Chiniguichi and six in Newfoundland. A number of Moose in both areas too ( one mom and calf walked up to me in the trail..talk about the end pucker...) and four caribou.

While looking at back end of one retreating bear, stepped in his poop. Wasnt looking that way.
