Katadyn Pocket Professional Water Filter
A reliable and durable water filter

© Outdoor Adventure Canada

Water is our most important resource. It can mean the difference between life and death. Canada has been blessed with an abundance of waterways filled with fresh water. Unfortunately what is considered fresh water isn't always safe water. Unsafe water can ruin an otherwise wonderful trip by making you ill or even worse, causing death. I never take chances when it comes to the safety of drinking water.

Recently I purchased a Katadyn Pocket water filtration system. Although this is not the lightest or most cost effective model it is exceptional for backpacking and canoeing. When backpacking a large body of water is not always available and sometimes one must pump water from creeks, bogs or ponds. What makes this filter superior to many others is the ease of cleaning the filter when it becomes clogged, allowing you to resume filtration very quickly.

This filter is robust and durable. The all metal construction houses 0,0002mm (0.2 micron) filter which is a special blend of clay, kieselguhr or diatom earth (a chalk like substance that comes from kiesel algae deposited on the seabed) and silver. Water is drawn into the pump, forced through the outside of the filter element into the center and out into your water bottle.

Microscopic pathogens like cholera, typhus, cryptosporidiosis, amoebic dysentery and so on are trapped on the outside of the filter. The filter can be scrubbed off when it becomes difficult to pump. The silver stops the bacteria from growing inside the filter.

The ceramic filter element has a life span of 50,000 liters. Combined with its lifetime warranty, ease of use and impeccable quality, the Katadyn Pocket Filter ranks high on my list for water filtration.
