Goose - Nomad Trekking Series
Comfort and warmth for foul weather

The Nomad
Trekking series jacket is completely wind and waterproof, the
fleece-lined hand warmer pockets are great, but a little difficult
to access until you get used to the placement. The large plastic
zippers with zipper pulls can be handled with mitts on, which
is a definite advantage in cold or wet weather. The wind flap
on front zipper with Velcro ensures no wind comes through. There
are elastics to cinch the waist to minimize chimney effect. The
sleeves of the shell are long enough and the liner attaches far
enough back to accommodate mitten cuffs comfortably; the Velcro
sleeve closure ensures an air (and snow) tight fit.
The attached
large hood with beak, elastic cinch and Velcro neck closure ensure
only minimal areas of the face are exposed to wind, even just
pulled over the head without being fastened it makes a huge difference
when standing around in a light breeze. The shell and liner combination
is perfect for base camp wear at the end of the day when you become
more sedentary and need to keep all your heat in.
The zippered pockets on the jacket are too small to store anything
in except a pair of thin gloves or mitts, they are not really
convenient. Larger cargo-style pockets on the jacket would be
wonderful. Also, having hooks or loops to which mitts or other
small things could be temporarily attached to would make this
even more user-friendly. Since it does not have any under-arm
vents, I would not recommend this to engage in a strenuous activity
(in order to cool down, you would have to remove the shell completely).
The
Nomad down insulater makes a great liner, is very warm for relatively
little bulk, fits nicely within the shell, has its own zippered
pockets which can be accessed by partially unzipping the liner
from the shell and has elastic waist cinch to minimize chimney
effect. Since it has only 3 fasteners to the shell, it can be
attached or removed quickly and easily. One has to be very careful
when taking off the shell/liner combo as the 3 elastic loops could
get pulled out.
The
pants are also totally wind and waterproof, with a wide sturdy
belt (enough to accommodate knife, multi-tool and other attachments),
sturdy belt loops, a hook on the belt to prevent it from sliding
off, wind/waterproof zippers for fly, pockets and bottom of pant
leg and large cargo pockets with flap seals that keep the snow
out even when toboganning down a hill at 40 km per hour. The only
thing lacking to make them perfect is elastic to cinch the pant
over boots so that deep snow would not get into the boots.
The optional
trekking series pouch is a great add on.
Overall
the Nomad Parka system performed very well. This is for the serious
trekker and will provide warmth in even the foulest of weather.
