A small tent with big features

With the ever growing popularity of self-propelled
sports like backpacking, kayaking, cycling and mountaineering,
pressure has been placed on manufacturers to engineer smaller,
lighter and stronger gear. Tents are no exception. The only problem
is, to make a tent lighter there are generally some sacrifices.
Usually size is the first consideration. Often people will use
what is called a bivy. Although incredibly light, bivy's are generally
very small, lack decent ventilation and can be somewhat uncomfortable
to be in for an extended period of time. Eureka stepped up and
faced the challenge head on by creating the Aurora 1 Lite.
The
Aurora 1 Lite is a single-person tent with big tent features.
The first impression I had was how well it was made. The tent
feels very robust with taped seams, 70 denier nylon floor, 50
denier ripstop polyester fly, no-see-um netting, 7001 aluminum
poles and #8 YKK zippers. Everything a multi-person tent would
have but here is the best part; it's only 2.15 kg (4 pounds 12
oz) with the pegs, poles and ropes.
When fully assembled
the Aurora 1 Lite has a small awning on one side and a large vestibule
on the other allowing you to store some gear or scurry into your
tent during inclement weather without getting the inside wet.
In warm weather the sides open up to provide excellent airflow.
If the weather gets bad fear not because it has 2000 mm waterproofing
on the floor and 1500 mm on the fly you will not have to worry
about getting wet.
I didn't have any problems
while testing this 3 season ultra-light tent and it was nice to
have 81 cm (2' 8") of headroom and 1.01 m x 2.39 m (3' 4"
x 7' 10") of floor space. I highly recommend this tent for
those people who need space to move but still want to keep the
weight down.
The team at OAC was
so impressed with this design that the Aurora 1 Lite has become
our preferred single person tent.
