Eureka! Moonshadow Solo Tent
Light and durable shelter for one

© Outdoor Adventure Canada

My first backpacking trip of the season is always quite rugged. I traverse rocks that range in size from a dinner plate to a car, past pounding surf to an interior campsite at the top of the Niagara Escarpment. In the past I have done this with my overweight backpack and two-person tent. This year I had the opportunity to test the Eureka Moonshadow Solo as my shelter for this trip. With the terrain I had to cover, I looked forward to reducing my pack weight. The Moonshadow only weighs 1.59 kg (3 lb 8 oz) which means a savings of 6 pounds in my backpack.

The Moonshadow Solo's overall dimensions are 81 cm x 81 cm x 2.4 m (2' 8" x 2' 8" x 8'). With only two poles it is not free standing so the fly has the job of keeping the tent up in addition to keeping the rain out. Without the fly the overall shape of the tent is a bit like the top of a covered wagon but on a smaller scale. The no-see-um mesh keeps out bugs and reduces condensation. The white ceiling makes for better visibility inside.

The vestibule is small but has enough room for my hiking boots and some other gear. The inside of the tent is just large enough to accommodate my sleeping gear, camera gear and my extra clothes. The reduced height means that there isn't room for a gear loft but the side pocket on the inner tent wall has enough space for my multi-tool and flashlight. I would not recommend using a candle lantern in this tent because of the small space.

The Moonshadow Solo is the perfect tent for kayakers, canoeists and backpackers who want a durable shelter but want to lighten their packs. Setup is easy and it offers more comfort than the standard Bivy.
