Killarney Lodge
A peaceful haven in Algonquin Park

© Outdoor Adventure Canada

Recently a reader from New York wrote me to ask my recommendations on a place for her to visit in Ontario. She was an active, middle aged lady who wanted accommodation with amenities that also allowed for easy access to activities such as canoeing, kayaking and day hiking. I found it very easy to recommend Killarney Lodge on the Highway 60 corridor in Algonquin Park.

Killarney Lodge has been in operation for 65 years and is located right on the water. This friendly Lodge is one of 25 lodges to win America's Favorite Inns Award. Prices vary depending on the accommodation and the season. The lakeside cabins are well appointed, private and are available in one and two bedroom sizes. Both sizes are equipped with a full and private bath. The cabins are without television or radio. I thought that this was odd at first, but one of the staff mentioned that it was to allow people enjoy the sounds of the loons. I must admit it is wonderful to hear their haunting song. All of the meals and a canoe are included.

The dining atmosphere is what the lodge refers to as "smart casual" and the cuisine is referred to as fine country dining. The smoke free dining room evokes the same warm feeling as the rest of the lodge. A fireplace provides ambiance after a day out in Algonquin Park. The lodge has thought of everything and staff will even pack a picnic lunch for you so that you can explore all day without having to return to the dining room for lunch. Although the dining area is unlicensed you may bring your own wine if you wish. The staff will provide a corkscrew and glasses for you. I was surprised to discover that the Lodge will even share its fine recipes with the guests.

There are many day use trails in Algonquin Park. Most of the trails are easy to moderate except for the Centennial Ridges Trail which requires a good level of fitness and sturdy hiking boots. Be sure to take water with you on the trails especially in the hotter weather. Booth's Rock is a moderate trail with a breathtaking lookout. The Visitor's Centre houses an art gallery, bookstore, theatre, restaurant and a beautiful viewing deck. The Visitor's Centre also has historic and wildlife exhibits. The Logging Museum, near the East Gate, is very interesting. A wheelchair accessible trail takes you through the exhibits.

Wildlife viewing in Algonquin Park is also quite spectacular. In the spring you will often see Moose along Highway 60 as they come there to eat the salt left from the roads. The birds are very friendly. With a bit of patience and a little bird seed you will be able to get Gray Jays and Chickadees to eat right out of the palm of your hand. In summer the roadside wildflowers are beautiful.

Killarney Lodge is fabulous spot for a weekend getaway or a week long stay. Please be sure to make a reservation because the lodge does book up fairly quickly, especially in the peak season. Algonquin Park has always been one of my favorite places and the hospitality at the lodge makes the adventure even more enjoyable by allowing you to experience Algonquin's wild side in comfort.
