The Summer Festival of Lights
A weekend adventure in Peterborough, ON
©
Outdoor Adventure Canada
For
almost 20 years Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism has put
on an exceptional family event at Crary Park in downtown Peterborough,
Ontario. The festival starts in late June and continues through
the summer. This event is the only one of its kind on the continent.
The Summer Festival
of Lights is free because of the generous contributions of local
companies and the numerous hours put in by volunteers. The festival
does accept donations if you would like to show your gratitude
and support.
There is a wonderful
lineup of musicians that perform on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.
The festival concerts include musicians such as Natalie McMaster,
the Barra MacNeils, John McDermott, and the Peters Drury Quartet
to name a view. Every musical interest seems to be covered this
year and there is even a local talent show plus a tribute to Abba
and the Bee Gees. The music starts at 8:00 pm and is followed
by the light show. You can rent lawn chairs for a nominal fee
but the numbers are limited so I would recommend bringing your
own.
Illuminated
boats gracefully "dance" to the music broadcast during
this part of the program and over 130 lights twinkle in time with
the songs. The Illuminated Boat Show starts at about 9:45 pm and
runs until 10:00 pm at which time fireworks start lighting up
the night sky from a barge out on the lake. More information and
a concert calendar is available at
If you are looking
for a place to stay in the area there is the Kawartha Trails Resort
located 12 km (7.5 miles) from the city of Peterborough. The resort
is located on the Otonabee River, part of the Trent Canal System,
and just north of Rice Lake. Accommodations are geared toward
RV's, conversion vans, tent trailers, truck campers, fifth wheel
campers, motorhomes and buses. There are no facilities for tenting.
The park is owned by Mike and Dana Ardiel and has been in operation
since 1995. For more information about the Kawartha Trails Resort
please visit their website at http://www.kawarthatrailsresort.com.
If you are interested
in history or in canoeing you should take an afternoon to explore
the Canadian Canoe Museum. You can read more about the museum
